Sunday Brunch is here
“There has never been a sadness that can’t be cured by breakfast food.”
— Ron Swanson
Thanks for clicking your way into this space. Every week or so, I’ll share some thoughts on a topic that’s on my mind. Sometimes I’ll touch on pertinent medical topics, sometimes I’ll share stories from my 40+ years in medicine, sometimes they won’t seem to have any connection to Pediatric Cardiology, or medicine, at all.
I promise I’ll always have a point. And remember, you’re auditing this course. It’s for your interest and amusement (and mine). There’s no quiz at the end, and the only paper that’s due will be mine, next week.
I’m inspired to do this, in part, by Dr. Grace Kong, a wonderful Pediatric Cardiologist who we hired at Weill Cornell when she graduated fellowship at Mt. Sinai in 2023. When I shared the news that I’d be starting Avalon Pediatric Cardiology and switching to working part time at Cornell, Grace lamented that she was really going to miss my stories. This is balanced against my wife’s frequent observation that NOBODY needs to hear my stories. Grace makes ONE! Anyway, click or don’t click. Choose for yourself. Nobody’s taking attendance!
In general I’ll post on Sundays, hence the name. I’ll try to post early, in case you’re heading to brunch with friends and you’re worried that you’ll run out of interesting topics to discuss. If this is true, then you might want to consider finding a new set of friends, but still, I’m here to help.
I’m prepared for the slings and arrows that might come my way from the New York Times when they realize that people have largely abandoned the Sunday crossword puzzle in favor of my blog. Will Shortz, you’ve had a long run. You’ve created your own field (“Enigmatology”). No one will blame you if you want to give it a rest. You’ve ea n d it.
The Archdiocese is concerned about attendance at Mass once this gets launched, too, but every now and then I’ll mention one of the long line of Catholic schools that I attended and we’ll be even.
And of course, I assume I’ll greatly impact the football coverage. It might start with the ESPNBet Hour, when Erin Dolan might say “My best bet this week is the total on Flynn’s blog, which is currently 975 words on FanDuel. I’ll take the Over.” Then during the early game, Kevin Harlan will start screaming “He was talking about some medical condition, and then about one of his high school teachers, and then back to medicine, and THEN there was a Springsteen quote. I DID NOT see that coming! WHAT A FINISH!” And then in the late game, Tom Brady will say… well, he might say….oh, forget it, nobody remembers anything he says.
Enjoy! And feel free to leave your thoughts. And remember you aren’t obligated to read this.
Unless you're Grace Kong!
